My definition of mental health is the ability to stay grounded and connected to myself, through the stress that life throws at me. This is an ongoing practice for me because not losing it is easier said than done. Might you feel the same way? In order to access coping skills and pause, I have to notice when I am getting upset and do something about it before it is too late.
I do have some strategies for handling myself in the heat of the moment, but the best strategies are ones I practice with preventively, so that my brain is better wired to notice and pause long enough, to change my thoughts, feelings, or sensations when stressed.
The tools and strategies I use I pull from Robyn Gobbel's training. One tool I practice ahead of time is to look for the glimmers in life, otherwise known as "noticing the good." Many, many more good things are going on in the world, than troubling things. Looking for the good could be something as majestic as a beautiful sunset but the practice does not need to be a fireworks explosion. Small glimmers can grow and strengthen my Owl Brain. These could be things like the breeze in my hair, the sun on my face, or a pile of clean laundry. What are yours?
