What if the goal is not to stop your child's challenging behavior?
Of course, we need to stop unsafe behaviors but what about those behaviors that fall outside aggression?
I believe the goal with behavior challenges is to simply witness the behaviors from a place of safety, holding space, offering soothing and connection. Afterall, all behaviors are adaptive and makes sense to the child. What you see is their best effort to do well and better regulate, albeit, not very effective at times. We have no right to judge them, though, but simply witness the suffering, with a ton of support.
This is the process of co-regulation that has become central in parenting these days. It is at the core of the work I do with the parents who come to me for parent coaching therapy. I walk parents through practical, hands-on ways to offer co-regulation to their challenging and complex children, that make sense and are doable.
It is never too late to change the way you parent your child or the way you interact with others in your life. If you are interested in walking through life in a more empowered way, offering co-regulation, then give me a call.
