Talk Therapy and Medication Management Working Together

Counseling for Parents of ADHD Children in California

Online Therapy That Understands ADHD Parenting Challenges

If you’re parenting a child with ADHD, you already know: this isn’t the kind of parenting you read about in baby books.

You’re exhausted. You’re trying to keep it together at work, while also navigating daily meltdowns, hyperfocus, impulsivity, and emotional swings at home. Your child’s nervous system is running hot—and yours is, too.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of experience supporting complex families, I provide specialized counseling for parents of ADHD children in California. Through online parent therapy, I help you make sense of what’s happening, manage your own stress, and build strategies that actually work for your child.

Why Parenting a Child with ADHD Feels So Hard

Parenting a neurodivergent child—especially one with ADHD—is not the same as parenting a neurotypical child. You’re not just managing behaviors. You’re managing a constantly overstimulated nervous system, executive functioning deficits, and a world that doesn’t understand what your child needs.

This leaves many parents feeling:

  • Overwhelmed by explosive or oppositional behaviors

  • Guilty for yelling, shutting down, or avoiding their child

  • Isolated because friends and family just don’t get it

  • Burned out from trying every strategy and still getting nowhere

  • Anxious that your child will struggle forever

You’re not alone—and you’re not failing.

Why Counseling for Parents of ADHD Children Matters

Your child’s symptoms affect your whole family. And when you're not resourced, everything feels harder.

That’s where counseling for parents of ADHD children comes in. This is therapy focused on you—the parent. It’s not about fixing your child. It’s about resourcing you to:

  • Regulate your own nervous system

  • Understand how ADHD shows up in your child

  • Shift your expectations to match your child’s developmental needs

  • Learn practical tools for co-regulation and behavior support

  • Set limits without shame or punishment

When parents feel calmer and more confident, their children do better. Period.

Why Online Parent Therapy Works

You’re busy. You’re stretched thin. That’s why I offer online therapy for parents of ADHD children in California.

Virtual counseling gives you:

  • Flexibility to attend sessions from your home, office, or car

  • Privacy and comfort without the stress of getting to an office

  • Real-time support for real-life parenting challenges

This therapy is built around your schedule and your reality.

What My Therapy Approach Includes

I blend practical tools with deep compassion to help you show up as the grounded, connected parent your child needs. My approach includes:

  • Trauma-informed care that honors your lived experience

  • Polyvagal theory to help you understand nervous system states and regulation

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to shift negative thought patterns

  • Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) to understand connection and relational safety

You’ll learn how to stop reacting and start responding—with calm, clarity, and confidence.

Medication + Therapy: A Collaborative Approach

Many of the families I support are also navigating psychiatric medication for their child—or considering it.

As part of your support, I collaborate with prescribing providers when needed, helping you:

  • Process your feelings about medication decisions

  • Track your child’s emotional and behavioral shifts

  • Support your child’s adjustment to medication

When therapy and medication are thoughtfully integrated, families often experience:

  • Faster relief from acute symptoms

  • Greater understanding of your child’s needs

  • A more sustainable path forward

FAQs: Counseling for Parents of ADHD Children

What is parent-focused therapy for ADHD?

It’s therapy for you, the parent. Instead of focusing on your child’s behavior alone, we focus on your regulation, your reactions, and your strategies.

Do you work with children directly?

My work is primarily with parents. Often, when we support the parent’s nervous system and skillset, the child’s behavior naturally improves.

Is online therapy really effective?

Yes! Especially for parenting support. We work in real-time, in your real environment. It’s practical, accessible, and effective.

What if I’m already working with a psychiatrist or pediatrician?

Great. I can coordinate care (with your consent) and help you integrate medication management into your parenting approach.

Is this covered by insurance?

I’m a private-pay provider. This gives us full freedom to focus on what your family needs—not what insurance dictates. I can provide superbills if your plan offers out-of-network reimbursement.
