When Parenting Feels Impossible

When Parenting Feels Impossible: Online Parent Therapy in California for Families With Complex Kids

You didn't sign up for this version of parenthood. You imagined bedtime stories and a kid who ran to you when things got hard. Instead, you're living in a house that feels like it's always one wrong word away from a full-blown meltdown — and you're exhausted.

I want you to hear this: You are not failing. Your child is not broken. And you don't have to figure this out alone.

I'm Abby, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with more than 30 years of experience working with complex children and their families in child welfare, foster care, and adoption. I'm the owner of Welcome Home Family Therapy, a virtual private practice offering online parent therapy in California to families statewide — no commute, no scrambling for childcare, just expert support from the comfort of your home.

You've Tried Everything. Here's Why Nothing Has Worked.

The reward charts. The consequences. The parenting books. The advice from people who don't actually live in your house. And still — the rages, the shutdowns, the way your child can go from zero to volcanic in seconds, leaving you shell-shocked and wondering what just happened.

Standard parenting advice doesn't work when your child's brain is wired differently. If your child has been diagnosed with — or you suspect —

• ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental differences

• Giftedness or twice-exceptionality (2e)

• Developmental trauma, early neglect, or adverse childhood experiences

• Post-adoption adjustment or attachment challenges

...then you already know that what works for other kids doesn't work for yours. Parenting counseling designed specifically for complex families is a completely different experience — and it's exactly what I offer.

Why Parenting Therapy Focuses on YOU — Not Just Your Child

Here's something that surprises a lot of parents: the most powerful way to help a struggling child often starts with you. After 30 years in child welfare, I've seen it over and over — when parents shift, children shift. Your child's nervous system is literally wired to co-regulate with yours.

In our work together through online parent therapy in California, you'll learn:

• Why your child's brain drives those "impossible" behaviors — and what's actually going on underneath

• How to stay regulated yourself when everything around you is on fire

• How to use connection as your first intervention, not your last resort

• How to repair after ruptures — the single most powerful parenting tool you have

This work is grounded in interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), polyvagal theory, trauma-informed care, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) — practical, brain-based approaches that work in the real world of your real family.

Why Online Parent Therapy in California Works So Well for Overwhelmed Parents

No commute. No logistics. No scrambling. You log on from your living room, your parked car, or wherever you can steal 50 quiet minutes. Sessions fit your life.

Access to specialized expertise, wherever you live. Whether you're in Los Angeles, Sacramento, the Central Valley, or a rural community — online parent therapy in California means geography is never a barrier to getting the right support.

Your home is your laboratory. Parenting challenges happen at home. When therapy also happens at home, what you're learning gets applied immediately, in the exact environment where you need it most.

More consistency. Faster results. The biggest predictor of progress in therapy is showing up. When there's no commute or schedule juggling, you're far more likely to stay consistent — and that's where real change happens.

Specialized Support for Complex, Complicated Families

Welcome Home Family Therapy was built for families who don't fit neatly into conventional therapy boxes. I work with:

• Parents of children with ADHD & Neurodivergence — tools to work with your child's brain, not against it

• Gifted & Twice-Exceptional (2e) families — support for the child who baffles everyone, including you

• Families navigating developmental trauma — understanding survival behavior, not just managing it

• Post-adoptive parents — attachment, identity, and the grief nobody warned you about

• Divorced & co-parenting families — consistency across two households for a child who needs it most

Parents who are struggling themselves — because sometimes the work starts with healing you

FAQs

What is parenting therapy, exactly?

Parenting therapy (also called parent therapy or parenting counseling) is a therapeutic process where you — the parent — are the primary client. We work on your understanding of your child's behavior, your own emotional regulation, and your ability to be the stable, connected presence your child's nervous system needs. It's not about fixing your child through you. It's about making you the healer in your home.

Why wouldn't you work with my child directly?

Sometimes I do, or I refer you to the right specialist. But research in interpersonal neurobiology consistently shows that the most powerful lever for child change is the parent-child relationship. When I help you understand and respond to your child differently, your child's nervous system literally feels safer — and that safety is where healing begins.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes — Research consistently supports the effectiveness of teletherapy. Multiple meta-analyses published through the NIH confirm that online therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person care. Most parents find online sessions easier to attend consistently, which is what produces results. We meet via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Most parents find online therapy easier to maintain consistently — and consistency is what produces results. For busy parents of complex kids, removing every possible barrier to showing up is a therapeutic strategy in itself.

Do you take insurance?

Welcome Home Family Therapy is a private-pay practice. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many families find that the expertise, flexibility, and confidentiality of private-pay therapy is well worth it — especially when you need a specialist, not a generalist.

Do you serve parents throughout California?

Yes. Because everything is 100% online, I work with parents anywhere in California — Los Angeles, the Bay Area, San Diego, Sacramento, the Central Valley, and rural communities where specialized support is hardest to find. Online parent therapy in California means you don't have to settle for whoever is closest.
